Congratualtions Don 60 Years of Service

Details
Society News

We are currently experiencing one of the most serious international crises since the Second World War with the invasion of Russia into Ukraine. Exactly 60 years ago, the Soviet Union and the USA came close to a major conflict over the Cuban Missile crisis.

That same year (1962), Marilyn Monroe died of a suspected suicide, the Beatles launched their very first single (Love me do) and the first James Bond film (Dr No) premiered.

What Wikipedia overlooked was that a young rugby player in Leicestershire, due to a serious lung injury, decided to become a Referee and joined LSRUR. That was Don Hope. Don refereed for 32 years until his limbs/joints started to complain, whereupon he switched to become an Assessor. He has continued with this role for a further 28 years, making this 60 years of uninterrupted service with the Society. This included several years on the Midland Group as a Match Observer. Don also served on the Committee for 18 years, 16 of those as Treasurer.

The occasion was marked by a presentation to Don by its President David Edkins, of an engraved tankard from the Society.

Congratulations go to Don; and the Society thanks Joan for allowing him out every weekend during each season.

Emergency Services Rugby

The society was extremely proud of Jenny Burrows who was asked to support some fantastic rugby from our emergency services in Nottingham. The national ladies teams of Police, Prisons and fire were on show at the home of Nottingham rugby Lady Bay. Jenny assembled a society's first all-female team of three for the occasion,  held on international women's day.

First up was Elanor taking charge of Women’s Police 2’s vs Prison Service assisted by Jenny & Kirsten.

The main event of the day was GB Police vs England Fire with Jenny Taking the whistle, assisted by Elanor & Kirsten.

Chairman Mark Elliot was there for the occasion and the team represented the society extremely well and we look forward to receiving the call again in the future.

7's Season Begins

Details
News

We have had a couple of Super Sundays this season, but March brought us 2 HUGE super Sundays. Oakham and Uppingham both hosted their annual 7's tournaments resulting in over 60 games of 7's over the 2 Sundays. Our society are fortunate to be asked along once again after a couple of years off, Guy and Luke taking part in both!

The rain stayed away for both weekends would you believe. So out with the washout cloggy 7's and in with the champagne sun shining 7's without having to get on a plane to Dubai!

The Uppingham Team

Luke Thompson, Phil Carter, Simon Hinks, Guy Gasper, David Cox, Elanor Wilkinson and Paul Tilley

The Oakham Team

Oakham 7's 2022

Pete Conor, George Richardson, Guy Gasper, Billy Richards, Mark Eliott, Luke Thompson, Greg Biddle and Andrew Torrens

Thank you also to Mr Chairman who was assigned as referee co-ordinator for Oakham, but stepped in to fill the 8 man team.

The staff at both Uppingham and Oakham pass on their sincere thanks for 2 very enjoyable days of rugby. If you fancy being part of any upcoming 7's tournaments please get in touch with the relevant fixtures secretaries when they reach out. Would be great to have more referees out on sundays supporting the variety of rugby we have upcoming this and next season.
