Christmas Words Of Wisdom from Your President

Here we are, half way through the season, and with the conclusion of the world cup, what a great start for rugby in general.

The mid season grading review took place on 13th December and all members with changes have been advised – well done to them, and keep up the great standards to the rest of our members.

Our planning is progressing well for our Annual Dinner, and with world cup final referee Wayne Barnes as our speaker, it is looking like a sell out!

The venue is at the Tigers ground once more, and even with the top referee in the world attending, your committee have kept the cost to an absolute minimum.

On the domestic front, the Domestic Law Variations (DLVs) regarding tackle height, seem to have been accepted well, without the predicted upheaval to the game – well done you referees for a safe and sensible application of these.

We are covering most games but are still needing more refs, so do continue to persuade people to take up the whistle wherever the opportunity arises.

A spin off from the world cup may hopefully be more players interested in the game, so hopefully more second and third team games to be covered too.

My Presidents lunch took place on Sunday 5th November at Longcliffe Golf Club and 44 people had a fantastic lunch and a few hours of discussion and fun. The society provided the wine and our ‘surprise guest speaker’ spent half an hour entertaining. Join us next year if you can – it is a great opportunity to thank wives, partners and family for letting us enjoy our rugby each week.

Have a fantastic Christmas and new year and I look forward to seeing you all again in the new year.

We would like to thank Greasley Electronics for their excellent support in repairing our communications kit. We were very impressed with their prompt service, and the quality of the repair work is excellent.

Our communications kits are an essential part of our match observation and teams of Match officials, and we were concerned when one of our kits stopped working as replacements are not cheap! However, Greasley Electronics were able to quickly diagnose the problem and repair the kit to a high standard.

Thank you, Greasley Electronics!

You may be aware that unfortunately, our sport has had another devastating blow.

20-year-old Maddy "Twinkle toes" Lawrence sustained an injury whilst playing for UWE on Wednesday 9th March and was admitted to hospital. Unfortunately during her time in hospital, she picked up a bacterial infection which worsened causing her to lose her life.

We wish all members to take a minute "Applause" prior to their games this weekend in honour of her memory.

As a society our thoughts go out to her friends, teammates and family members.

Dear all,

Please find end of season newsletter linked below.

A massive amount has happened this year and it shows the dedication of the committee and all our referees to the game and the society. We would like to thank you all for your hard work and commitment this season.

In preparation for our 125th Anniversary dinner our shop is now stocked with these fantastic ties. Why not bundle up with a new item of stash like our warm up t-shirt for the warmer weather!

We have had a couple of Super Sundays this season, but March brought us 2 HUGE super Sundays. Oakham and Uppingham both hosted their annual 7's tournaments resulting in over 60 games of 7's over the 2 Sundays. Our society are fortunate to be asked along once again after a couple of years off, Guy and Luke taking part in both!

The rain stayed away for both weekends would you believe. So out with the washout cloggy 7's and in with the champagne sun shining 7's without having to get on a plane to Dubai!

The Uppingham Team

Luke Thompson, Phil Carter, Simon Hinks, Guy Gasper, David Cox, Elanor Wilkinson and Paul Tilley

The Oakham Team

Oakham 7's 2022

Pete Conor, George Richardson, Guy Gasper, Billy Richards, Mark Eliott, Luke Thompson, Greg Biddle and Andrew Torrens

Thank you also to Mr Chairman who was assigned as referee co-ordinator for Oakham, but stepped in to fill the 8 man team.

The staff at both Uppingham and Oakham pass on their sincere thanks for 2 very enjoyable days of rugby. If you fancy being part of any upcoming 7's tournaments please get in touch with the relevant fixtures secretaries when they reach out. Would be great to have more referees out on sundays supporting the variety of rugby we have upcoming this and next season.

Please find the amended Laws presentation and videos in our training and documents section of the website.
